The Call to Adventure starts, like all great adventures, with a map - in this case Hecataeus of Miletus’ c. 500 BCE map of the world - followed by an excerpt from Homer’s Odyssey. Guided by these bemusing artefacts, we examine the role of story in shaping how we know the world, and how that has changed since Hecataeus signalled the first dawn of rational understanding.
This logical approach has gathered much momentum over the millennia since, becoming our dominant way of knowing. This way of understanding has brought us to this present moment, this New Bounded Age as the book describes it; a pivotal time for humanity and all life on Earth, as we try to work out how we arrived at this point of crisis and collapse, and how we might get beyond it.
Chapter 1, Here Be Dragons takes a fresh look at these mythical beasts, whose greedy demands for sacrifice from powerless townsfolk echo the entitled expectations of AI datacentres that have landed outside cities across the globe.
In a reading from the Norse myth of Sigurd, we’ll meet Fafnir, the dragon Tolkien based Smaug on, along with everyone’s favourite trickster Loki, before turning to more modern times with the story of how the birth of the British Empire caused the death of millions in the Bengal Famine.
This high-quality print version will include four duplicate chapters to tear+share, along with guidance on hosting your own Telling of these tales.
We’ll be crowdfunding the publication of this first Times Long Told periodical early in 2027.
